Living the Strange Life

I am not my anxiety.

I am not my anxiety.

This has come up several times in the last few months and it's starting to wear me out. I am not my anxiety.  It's strange to hear it brought up in conversations: "You have anxiety you can't do this." "How could you ever do that, don't you have anxiety?" or "I don't believe you have anxiety." I've had it my whole life, my anxiety disorder and I are in a deeply committed relationship. When I was a teenager, a point in my life where success was defined by how well you could assimilate into whatever status quo was (and honey,...

Can You Mix Anything with Goth?

In the past few years, we've seen a wave of new branches attempt to sprout from the tree of Goth. Typically, when we talk about goth in a general fashion two visions come to mind; Traditional Goth and Victorian Goth. The other variations? Well, that depends on who you ask. The One True Goth Look, I'm going to level with you. It is a beautiful thing that this culture has survived long enough to even have conversations about which variations are or aren't appropriate. Goth and Death

Ask any goth what they're interested in and they might say they have "dark interests" or "morbid fascinations". While these responses are perfectly acceptable in a dimly lit club among peers, these open-ended terms can have some consequences on outsiders' perceptions of our darling subculture. So like any curious person, I have to ask why? (And give you links which are underlined.) Let's talk about the consequences first. I am a firm advocate for developing a strong understanding of yourself, which means understanding and being honest about why you like the things you like and do the things you do. Now, it...

WTF is Nu Goth and Why Do We Love to Hate It

WTF is Nu Goth and Why Do We Love to Hate It

(Originally published on June 30, 2016) Ah, Nu Goth, the newest addition to the Goth family tree. So fashionable and trendy that it makes us wonder if this trend will ever pass... oh and it will, don't worry. Goth is Timeless So, ages ago, I compared Goth culture to an amusement park, where there are all sorts of fun things to do, see, eat, and it's Goth as long as you stay within the amusement park. Like Disneyland, we have Medieval/ Renaissance Goth, Victorian Goth, Lolita Goth, etc. Sometimes there is even a fair amount of overlap and we're generally...
